Michele Clapton, one of the show’s costume designers, revealed in a conversation that many of the plush caps worn during GOT, including Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow’s iconic fur coat, and those of Night’s Watch were made from IKEA rugs. Continue reading to learn more.

Michele Clapton, Game of Thrones costume designer for Game of Thrones, spoke to the Los Angeles audience at the Getty Museum in 2016. She admitted that she used IKEA rugs to create some of the iconic costumes. The designer explained that she had visited an IKEA to pick up a rug to make a Night’s Watch costume. It’s not easy. We will take whatever we can. We first cut them, then we shaved and then we added leather straps.”

The Game of Thrones costume designers spoke out about their process to create authenticity. Designer said that they wanted the audience to be able to smell the costumes before adding, “Here, they were waxed, frosted, so they almost belong in the landscape.”

Michele Clapton, Game of Thrones’s actress, also disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Wildings costumes were made from bones purchased online by the team. Clapton stated that they purchased a lot of bones from eBay. We then made armor from the molds. All this was done with string and latex, but it looks like guts.

We think that even though this show had a budget around $10 million per episode, and more later, they have made some cuts to help push the funds to other areas to improve GOT.
